Elikplim Aborhor, a nine-year-old pupil of the Norlivime Bishop Herman Basic School in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region has reportedly drowned in an abandoned fish pond at Goba-Futaga, a suburb of Keta.
According to reports, the deceased was playing near the pond when his slipper fell into the fish pond. In an attempt to retrieve his slippers, Elikplim fell into the pond as his friends looked on helplessly as they couldn’t do anything to save him.
His mother, Patience Awudie told the media that her son went out to pay shortly after he returned back from school. She said that the pond which her son fell in has been there for about three years and her son died even before people arrived at the scene.
The deceased’s father, Mr. Kordzo Aborhor also reacted by saying that the abandoned fishing pond needs to be covered immediately to avoid future eventualities.
The Assemblywoman for Keta, Madam Ruby Adukpo, said the pond will be removed to prevent repeat incidents, and she urged parents to keep an eye on their children’s activities.
Relatives of the deceased have asked the public to help the police by providing information about the boy’s death.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Keta Municipal Hospital morgue pending postmortem as the police commences investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the boy.
